Brighton Pride

Brighton Pride will be taking place from August 5th to 7th this year. Brighton has had a longstanding importance within the LGBTQ+ community, as the LGBTQ+ community was essential to the formation of the city back in the 1800’s. With this it is no surprise that Brighton has been celebrating and uniting the LGBTQ+ community for years with one of the UK’s biggest pride celebrations.
The first celebration of pride in Brighton happened in 1973 organized by the Sussex Gay Liberation Front, which was a small but lively celebration. This was groundbreaking for the time as a few years prior it was still illegal for men to be together, with serious consequences if caught. Several years later Brighton once again came together to host pride in 1991 to take a public stand against the political propaganda that was occurring attempting to create legislation that would have banned the “promotion” of homosexuality. These political Pride gatherings happened until 1994, then in years after pride transformed into what we know it as today. Throughout the years pride has grown to be a beautiful celebration that welcomes well over 100,000 people, and is also a means of raising money for local LGBTQ+ organizations. Gradually over the years Brighton Pride has grown to include local businesses participation, and even attracts big names to perform and enjoy the celebration!
